Pakistan’s Dynamic Defense Industry Touches $ 1.5bn Vending

According to a journal called Jane’s Defense Weekly has reported concerning Pakistan’s defense production that a Pakistani official has claimed saying, “We have substituted imported defense equipment worth $1.5bn [per year], which for us is a huge bonus”.

Recently, Pakistan had also hosted 8th International defense exhibition and seminar Ideas 2014 at Expo Center Karachi under the slogan of Arms for Peace, in which Pakistan had showcased its defense production capabilities and equipments and also provided platform to many other countries to also present their defense equipments as well to persuade international clients for deals.

Pakistan’s booming defense industry is being fully supported by Pakistani government with providing them all required resources. Pakistan’s defense productions are mainly done in Pakistan Aeronautical Complex at Kamra, which manufactures -17 Thunder fighter jet, Mushak and Super Mushak aircraft and also produced defense apparatus value a billion dollars last year.

Other key defense production unit is setup in Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) and the Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF), these factories produces small and medium size defense equipments mainly for Army and Navy, their defense equipments export is touching $500 million per annum.

On the other hand, Taxila complex manufactures Al Khalid and Al Zarrar tanks along with armored personnel carriers, which is being highly considered by the international buyers in Ideas 2014 exhibition.

Despite of being producing high-end defense equipments, there is a room of improvement for incorporating latest technology to cut down the cost. Furthermore, local defense industry needs to find more international clients for further big transactions, like some countries are found interested in purchasing JF-17 Thunder jets.
