Mumtaz Qadri Case and his Defenders

Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin of Salman Taseer has support of many lawyers and majority of the public of Pakistan. The government lawyers are reluctant to prosecute against Mumtaz Qadri and are willing to abolish his punishment.

A large number of his supports gathered before Islamabad High Court and raised slogans in his favour. More than 90 lawyers were present in court premises to support him although such a large number of people are not allowed to gather inside the court.

Because of the sensitivity, of the case many government prosecutors are hesitate to file case against the convict. Court deferred the case till 3 February on the request of federal lawyers. While the picture of a lawyer who was kissing Mumtaz Qadri spread viral and many people on social media are sharing that picture in his solidarity.

Irrespective of lawyers and public, many former judges are also favoring him and the prominent  judges who assembled in IHC are Khawaja Muhammad Sharif and Mian Nazeer Akhtar. Both are the former judges of Lahore High Court.

The security was remained tightened when Mumtaz Qadri came in court and extra police escorts were deployed inside and outside the Islamabad High Court. Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddique and Justice Noorul Haq N.Quershi are judges of IHC who were hearing the case.

In 2011 when Mumtaz Qadri first time appeared in the court more than 3000 people gathered before the court while they were holding placards in his support. On the fourth death ceremony of Salman Taseer, unknown persons attacked on people who were busy in enlightening vigil. The attackers were equipped with baton and they also torn apart the posters of former governor. Taseer was Punjab’s former Governor and assassinated by his own security guard Mumtaz Qadri on January 4, 2011.
