According to resources, a number of protesters gathered after Friday prayer to protest against Indian Police for arresting Kashmiri separatist leader Musarat Alam. Indian police used baton charged and gas shelling to disperse the protestors.
Indian police home arrested the two senior Kashmiri leaders Syed Ali Gilani and Meerwaiz Umar Farooq while arrested Huriyat leader Mussarat Ali for leading a rally against India and for raising slogans in the support of Pakistan.
Mr. Alam was arrested from his residence in Srinagar, the state’s capital, Friday. A case has been registered against him at a local police station under charges related to unlawful activity, criminal conspiracy, rioting and endangering safety of others, Inspector General of Police Javed Geelani told India Real Time Friday.
“Alam has been arrested in connection with provocative actions during the rally,” Mr. Geelani, no relation to Syed Ali Shah Geelani, said. Mr. Alam will appear before a local court this week, he added.
In comments to local television channels after his arrest, Mr. Alam said arrest was “nothing new” for him.
“This detention will not deter us. Nothing will change. Raising of Pakistani flags and chanting pro-freedom slogans is nothing new here it has been happening since 1947,” Mr. Alam said.
A number of militant groups have operated in the region since the insurgency erupted in 1989. An estimated 68,000 people have died in the fighting and the ensuing crackdown by Indian forces.
